I’m afraid the popular consensus of Christianity is that it’s just a bunch of rules.
“Thou shalt not…”
Why would anyone want to become part of a religion that removes all the fun? If I have to give up some of my favorite things, why even entertain the idea?
These are legitimate questions that deserve an explanation. But they are also questions that are misguided by the false notion that Christianity is a religion full of “thees and thous.”
What if real Christianity was summed up this way:
“…this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.” (1 John 3:23)
Still not sure about a God who gives commands?
Picture it this way: A father guides his two-year-old around a playground. She, of course, climbs to the highest point of the slide, away from his grasp. He can guide her with words of warning, but He cannot make her sit down and go down the slide safely. The little girl has a choice. Follow her Daddy’s commands, or possibly get very hurt.
When we picture this loving father caring for his daughter, we don’t question it. In fact, we embrace it, knowing it is right and good.
The God of the Bible is not only loving, kind and good, He cares about each and every detail of our lives.
He doesn’t want us to fall. He gives us commands that are for our very best. Yet, He allows us to make the decision to follow.
There are many things in life that seem right to us, but in the end they lead to death. (Proverbs 14:12)
Authentic Christianity is faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of our lives.
It goes way beyond rules and regulations. In fact, Jesus’ death on the cross tore the veil of the temple in two so that we could symbolically enter the most holy place, a place formerly reserved for the high priest. Christians get to enter into a relationship with the God of the universe!
Sound too far-fetched?
Once a person believes that Jesus died for the sins of the world, rose again and will return one day…once they confess with their mouth and believe in their heart that He is God…the rules change.
No longer is it all about stipulations, it is all about adoration. Adoration of the King of Kings, of Abba Father, who guides us with commands that are for our good.
Do you know Him?
That empty place in your heart isn’t from anything on this earth. Nothing will fill it.
All the searching, all the running, all the avoiding can be halted today with the most important decision you will ever make.
As you stand at the top of that slippery slope, what voice are you hearing? Can you hear your Father? He longs for you to follow His command, surrender to Him, and enter into a relationship with His Son.
Christianity isn’t just a bunch of rules.
It’s summed up in 2 commands. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. And love others as you love yourself.”
I don’t know about you, but that’s just the kind of “religion” needed in today’s world. And I’m all in.
