The infamous Yellow Brick Road, thought to be a figment of the imagination, in actuality, was modeled after a road in Holland, Michigan.
Roger S. Baum, the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum, wrote: “Most people don’t realize that The Wizard of Oz was written in Chicago, and the Yellow Brick Road was named after winding cobblestone roads in Holland, Michigan where great-grandfather spent vacations with his family.”
There are actually many yellow brick roads throughout the world, made of yellow cobblestones that glisten in the sunlight. I’d like to see one someday.
As a Kansas Girl, I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz every year, as it was broadcast on channel 6, the snowiest channel there was.
Oh how my dad would tweak the rabbit ears to try and get a clear picture!
Still, we faithfully watched as Dorothy followed the Yellow Brick Road all the way to Oz…only to discover the great and mighty wizard an impostor.
How was she to know?
And how are we to know which road to travel? Which path to take?
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14
Now, I know what some of you are thinking. I’ve thought it myself at one time.
Why would God make the way to heaven so narrow? Doesn’t that seem unfair?
But what if the narrow way is the most loving, perfect way, made clear to all of us? No guess-work, no confusion, no trying this and that in hopes of arriving…just a clear-cut path that leads right to heaven’s door.
I am still sensing some doubt, and I understand. I really do. For in our humanness, we want there to be dozens of yellow brick roads that all lead to the same place…eternity with God. We cross our fingers and hope that the path we are on is the right one.
But deep down, in our heart of hearts, we know it isn’t.
What Yellow Brick Road are you on? The same one Dorothy travelled with Tin Man and Scarecrow? Following friends, fighting the bad guy, and finally arriving in Oz?
After all, Tin Man got a heart. Scarecrow got a brain. Lion got courage. And Dorothy got a ride to Kansas in a hot air balloon.
But at the end of it all, it was only a dream. A figment of Dorothy’s fevered imagination. Entertaining for sure, but not reality.
Dear Ones, the reality is, we were created to spend eternity with God. And even though we took different paths from the very beginning of time, He made a Way through His Son. In all of our wandering, He said, “I love you too much to let you stay lost. Here is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Follow Me, and I will give you rest.”
There is a reason why we should never follow the Yellow Brick Road. No matter how fun, how exciting, or how right it seems, the truth is, it’s just a glistening, cobblestone road leading to the ultimate disappointment.
Are you ready to take that step off the wide, beaten path, and step through the narrow gate? It is not hidden. It is as plain as day.
Jesus said, “I am the Gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved.” John 10:9
I would love to hear from you today. I don’t have all the answers, but I know the One who does! Please send me an email or comment and I will get back to you ASAP.
For now, I’m off to watch the Wizard of Oz, on my big screen TV…no rabbit ears included. 🙂
